Healthy lunch box
Nutritionist Dr. Evelyn Hannon recommends that a lunchbox should contain:
- Drink
- Dairy
- Protein
- Carbohydrates
- Fruit and vegetables
Drink It's important for kids to stay hydrated throughout the day - a good idea is to freeze the drink the night before to keep it cool. It'll be thawed by lunchtime.
Dairy Cheese, milk or yoghurt are excellent sources of calcium which are important for healthy bones and teeth.
Protein Important for growth and development, sources include lean meat (eg ham), fish, cheese or eggs.
Carbohydrates Sources include bread, rolls or pasta. Wholemeal or brown varieties are best as they are higher in fibre (for healthy digestion).
Fruit and vegetables Consider choosing smaller pieces of different coloured fruit such as grapes, cherry tomatoes and raison to keep it interesting and easy to eat.
